Terminology and Interface Reference

A guide to the terms, labels, and concepts used within the Roxencombe platform and across this website.

Why Terminology Matters

The Roxencombe platform uses a consistent set of terms throughout its interface. Understanding these terms before navigating the system helps users interpret what they are seeing, locate items more efficiently, and understand the relationships between categories.

The terms on this page reflect the platform's intended vocabulary. Some may differ from terminology used in other information systems. Where a term has a specific meaning within Roxencombe that differs from common usage, the definition below should be understood to govern.

Core Terminology

  • Category A named grouping within the classification hierarchy. Categories are defined in advance and applied consistently to all items within the platform. Each item belongs to at least one category.
  • Sub-category A more specific grouping nested within a parent category. Sub-categories are used when a category contains a sufficiently large or distinct set of items to benefit from further organisation.
  • Classification layer The processing step that assigns incoming information to the appropriate category and sub-category. The classification layer is applied consistently to maintain a coherent and navigable hierarchy.
  • Hierarchy The parent-to-child structure of categories, sub-categories, and individual entries. The hierarchy provides a navigable tree that organises the full scope of information available within the platform.
  • Reference index A secondary entry point to platform information, organised alphabetically by term or concept rather than by category membership. Useful when the relevant category is uncertain.
  • Summary panel A condensed overview of a category or sub-category, displayed at the top of that section in the platform interface. Summary panels allow users to assess relevance without reviewing all contents.
  • Access level The tier of access associated with an approved request, which determines which categories and information types are available to the user. Access levels are defined by the operating team.
  • Enquiry A message submitted to the support team through the contact form. Enquiries may relate to access requests, general questions about the platform, technical matters, or feedback.
  • Access request A specific type of enquiry in which the submitter requests access to one or more sections of the platform. Access requests are reviewed individually and are not approved automatically.
  • Filter A mechanism that narrows the visible scope of information within a category view. Filters do not remove items from the platform; they adjust which items are visible in the current session.
  • Operating team The team responsible for maintaining the platform's classification system, reviewing access requests, and responding to support enquiries. The operating team is reachable at [email protected].
